CRC CARES Lends Expertise to UVA Engineering Class

On behalf of CRC CARES, John Dameron and Dan Glavin addressed the University of Virginia (UVA)’s civil engineering capstone class on Tuesday, April 13 with an overview of real estate development and how an engineering background can benefit a real estate career.

John and Dan, both UVA alumni, discussed the scope of a real estate project from concept to completion and the ways engineers can impact each stage of the process. Real estate development requires problem solving and often a deep understanding of physical structures; an engineering background lends this unique and beneficial perspective to the field.

John and Dan referenced case studies like Ten at Clarendon to give students applicable examples of how CRC utilizes engineers and engineering mindsets. For example, by approaching the project from an engineer’s imaginative perspective, the team was able to amplify its design-think process and find newer, better ways to benefit the community. As a result, the project offers the only four-bedroom floor plans in the area, provides unparalleled amenities like a lending library and rooftop garden, and is the first and only LEED® Platinum multifamily community in Arlington County.

This was the sixth presentation CRC CARES has given for the civil engineering capstone class, with fellow UVA civil engineering graduate, Casey Nolan, presenting in the past.

“It is so important for our students to understand the possibilities of what they can do with their engineering degree,” said UVA Civil Engineering Assistant Professor, Dr. Lindsay Ivey Burden. “Your presentations continue to inspire our students with applicable examples and thoughtful words of advice.”
